Estoy realmente contento! Luego de trabajar por dos anios en el uso de IR imaging para skin cancer, hemos enviado el primero (de muchos mas, espero) documento al journal Infrared Physics & Technology . Se que no es una revista excelente (tiene un impact factor de 1.46), pero es un gran comienzo para dar a conocer la metodologia que implementamos a la comunidad cientifica (ingenieros, especificamente). El plan ahora es obtener mas resultados (intra usuario e inter usuario) para estudiar la validez del metodo empleado a mayor escala. Nuestro plan para eso es enviar un paper al JAMA Dermatology or al Journal of Investigative Dermatology, con la idea de que la comunidad medica tambien sepa de nuestra idea. Esperemos que las cosas sigan asi de bien :) Seb

Why more backup?... is the question that my wife/friends always ask me when I mention the keyword " backup "...  Since I lost several of my pictures after the sudden death of my "warehouse" disk back in 2001, I decided to always keep a second copy of my files. About two years ago my DELL computer died and I was able to recover about 99% of my files thanks to the double copy I had... but all the pictures got corrupted metadata and I had to manually update their info on a picture-by-picture basis. I haven't finished yet. Since then, I decided to change my backup strategy. If you look around, you will find cases of people who lost  +8000 of their pictures , or, as one friend, who reinstalled his /home partition in top of is *only copy of tons of pictures*. If you value your data, you should have backup. And a second copy on an external hardrive is never enough says Scott in this blog post . Anyways... I wanted to share here my backup plan. The salmon was approximately 18 inches long, weighed 3.8 lbs, and was not alive at the time of scanning. The task administered to the salmon involved completing an open-ended mentalizing task. The salmon was shown a series of photographs depicting individuals in social situations with a specified emotional valence. The salmon was asked to determine what emotion the individual in the photo must have been experiencing. Stimuli were presented in a block design with each photo presented for 10 seconds followed by 12 seconds of rest. A total of 15 photos were displayed. Total scan time was 5.5 minutes. Aca la fuente

One of my colleagues called me to tell the following story: "A high school student came to me asking for some work.  I could not really employ him, so I gave him the book of Ladan Arissian to read (Lasers, the Power and Precision of Light). He came back the next week with a few questions, and the following week and the following... It was amazing that he was able to understand it all, with only a high school background. After he finished the book, he was so excited about lasers that he enrolled in a real School of Optics (in Tucson, AZ)". and I am really sure that several talents are lost like this...

Como baje unos cuantos kilos desde que me puse en campana con mis caminatas, los pantalones se me estaban yendo al suelo bien seguido. No hasta el mismo suelo, pero casi. Incluso, estaba caminando menos por el solo hecho de que se me caian los pantalones y me los tenia que sujetar al caminar. Realmente, una lata. Lo mas patetico sucedio estando en el trabajo. Con las manos ocupadas mientras movia equipamiento de un lugar a otro, mis pantalones llegaron a medio trasero. Camine con las piernas hiper-abiertas para evitar que bajaran mas. Funciono, pero en ese momento dije basta. Asi que me compre suspensores en amazon despues de leer un review de un tipo de mi talle diciendo que estaba feliz. Hoy es el primer dia que los uso. Y estoy muy feliz! Ahora a caminar para ver como me va :)

I am really, really happy. I worked more than 2 years on a paper that got finally accepted. The manuscript reads great and got minor revisions. Next goal: finish the JAMA paper and start writing my proposal!

Finally! After two years working on that thing, it was finally submitted. Let's home we get some good feedback from the revision =) Today's work is done.

Just learned this... So will copied as is from the source ( here ) I just learned something remarkable, and I have to write it down so I don't forget: Often IEEE conferences will require you to submit a PDF with embedded fonts. If you're forced to do this, no doubt you're familiar with a hugely irritating fact about most LaTeX packages: they don't embed fonts by default. There are workarounds, like the ps2pdf command line parameters that force font embedding, but using them can be awkward (e.g., if your LaTeX target isn't postscript, or if you're using a GUI LaTeX editor). But if you're a Mac user, like me, here's all you have to do: Open the PDF in Preview, and then save it again. It's saved with fonts embedded. That's it, seriously! Awesome, right?
